Michael A. Horn, J.D.
Attorney and Counselor at Law

Michael Horn is a licensed Iowa attorney admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for Southern District of Iowa and the Iowa District Courts and has been practicing law since 2007, serving businesses, families, and individuals throughout Iowa. He is a member of the Polk County Bar Association and the Iowa Bar Association. He has performed guest speaking engagements on topics such as foreclosure and repossession; Fair Debt Collection Practices Act; Iowa Consumer Credit Code; debt collection; and locating assets and collection tactics.

Michael has extensive experience in representing clients in small claims and district court levels within civil and criminal litigation, including dissolution of marriage, bankruptcy, will and estate planning, commercial collections, consumer collections, creditor rights, domestic abuse, drug and alcohol related offenses, assault, and uninsured motorist subrogation for insurance companies. He has successfully represented clients in court trials achieving positive results on their behalf as well as having additional experience in contract drafting and review.

In January 2017, Michael completed training for the Polk County Bar Association’s Mediation Program. He holds mediations in his office building or travels within Polk County to serve as a mediator.

Education

Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa; Bachelor of Arts, Political Science with Academic Honors of Dean’s List.

The University of Iowa College of Law, Iowa City, Iowa; Juris Doctor. While attending law school, Michael was the symposium editor of The Journal of Gender, Race & Justice in Iowa City. He was the primary note editor for a published article on federal sentencing guidelines and organized logistics for the annual symposium on welfare reform.

Personal Life

Michael was born in Wisconsin and grew up in the high desert of southern California. He returned to the Midwest to attend college and law school. He began practicing law in Des Moines in 2008 at Bertroche Law Offices and joined the firm of Kuntz, Laughlin, and Horn in 2011. After the passing of his partner, Ron Kuntz, in 2016, Michael founded Horn Law Offices. He has been married to his wife, Carrie, since 2010, and they have two daughters, Lila and Sadie.
